SEATTLE HILL PTO: Mountaineer Monthly

February 2012

Many of us have heard in the news that education budgets are being cut across Washington State, yet Washington State has the “paramount duty” to provide for the education of all children.

Washington State Constitution, Article IX, SECTION 1 PREAMBLE It is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders, without distinction or preference on account of race, color, caste, or sex.

In a recent Washington Supreme Court ruling it was upheld that our state government has not fully funded basic education.

How does this affect us here at Seattle Hill Elementary?

This year we have more students in our classrooms than ever before.  Some of our classrooms, including primary grade levels have close to 30 students in a class.  Additionally, our teachers and staff have been required to take “furlough” days January 23-27, February 16th and May 25th, which means unpaid time for them, and less classroom instruction time for our children.

You may be wondering, “What can I do?” or “How can I stop this?” Get active! Let your elected officials know that cuts to our children’s education are not acceptable.  For more information please visit: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder and type in your address.  This identifies your Legislator and provides contact information. You may Email your representative, write them letters or call them to discuss your concerns. To stay informed with “up-to-date” information go to Facebook and “like” We Support Schools – Snohomish.

Our next PTO General Meeting will be Tuesday, March 13th @ 6:45 pm. As always, childcare is provided. Should you have topics of interest or need to address our Board prior to the 13th please contact us via email and we will gladly be of assistance.

To all of the room parents for organizing classroom holiday parties. Children always look forward to this fun day but are unaware of all the work that goes into making it so special. We appreciate your efforts.
